Pharmacy First - April 2024
The Pharmacy First service enables members of the public to visit pharmacies, as a first port of call, for help with a range of common minor conditions.
The service enables pharmacists to offer advice to patients and supply NHS medicines, where clinically appropriate, for:
- Sinusitis – for children and adults aged 12 years and over;
- Sore throat – for children and adults aged 5 years and over;
- Earache (Acute otitis media) – for children aged 1 to 17 years;
- Infected insect bite – for children and adults aged 1 year and over;
- Impetigo – for children and adults aged 1 year and over;
- Shingles – for adults aged 18 years and over; and
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women aged 16 to 64 years.
It is hoped that the service will be expanded to include more conditions in the future.
In the consultations with a pharmacist, people with symptoms suggestive of the seven conditions will be provided with advice and be supplied, where clinically necessary, with a prescription-only treatment under a Patient Group Direction (PGD) or a pharmacy only medicine.
If the pharmacy team cannot help with the condition the patient is presenting with, they will be referred to the appropriate healthcare access point, such as a GP surgery or A&E.
In addition to this, patients can continue to be able to access emergency prescription medicines or consultations on other minor conditions where they have been referred to the pharmacy by NHS 111, their GP surgery or other settings.
The Pharmacy First service is an optional service, but over 95% of pharmacies have signed up to offer it.

Practice Merger
Normanby Medical Centre and Manor House Surgery - Patient Briefing
In January 2023, Normanby Medical Centre and Manor House Surgery considered merging together to become one GP practice. This was to help us continue to improve the quality of care for all our patients because we would be able to work more efficiently by sharing and developing the expertise of a larger clinical team.
We invited all registered patients aged 16 years and over, carers of registered patients, local stakeholders, and the wider community to provide feedback and to help inform the practices' next steps.
Following the engagement period, Normanby Medical Centre and Manor House Surgery submitted a practice merger application to NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board [NENC ICB]. The NENC ICB approved the application for the practice merger, and the merger commenced on 1st May 2023.
We are pleased that this positive outcome will bring long term sustainability and continued high quality primary care services for the people we serve. There will be no changes to practice opening hours, appointments, staff, or services, which will continue to be delivered from both sites.
We are now able to offer you choice to book an appointment at either site, giving you access to more clinical staff and more choice of where you want to be seen.
Thank you for your involvement and for any feedback you shared as part of this process.
